About Us
Shot in the Dark Forensics, LLC
Shot in the Dark Forensics provides professional investigative genetic genealogy services for complex identity questions, historical investigations, and cases requiring careful scientific and genealogical interpretation. The practice is built around a methodical, ethics-driven approach to genetic genealogy, emphasizing transparency, documentation, and respect for the limits of inference.
Services are structured to support cases at any stage of investigation, from initial assessment and DNA testing strategy through genetic genealogy analysis, opt-in database use where permitted, and family tree reconstruction. Each case is approached individually, with professional discretion applied to method selection, workflow design, and analytical strategy based on the condition of available data and the goals of the inquiry.
Investigative genetic genealogy is an inferential process. Shot in the Dark Forensics emphasizes clear communication regarding uncertainty, the distinction between investigative findings and legal proof, and the need for independent confirmation where results may be used for legal or evidentiary purposes. Conclusions are developed through critical evaluation of genetic evidence, genealogical records, and corroborating information, with careful documentation at each stage.
The practice operates in alignment with recognized professional and ethical frameworks governing forensic genealogy and investigative practice. Our work is informed by guidance from NTVIC and the Investigative Genetic Genealogy Accreditation Board (IGGAB), the Genealogical Proof Standard as articulated by the Board for Certification of Genealogists, and inspection-style principles derived from ISO/IEC 17020.
The handling, storage, and disclosure of genetic and personal data reflect HIPAA-aligned privacy and confidentiality practices, informed by the current manager’s background as a board-licensed naturopathic physician with professional experience managing sensitive health and identity information under regulated clinical and ethical standards.
Together, these frameworks guide case intake, scope definition, documentation, data handling, analytical decision-making, and reporting. They do not predetermine outcomes; rather, they ensure that methods are transparent, defensible, and ethically constrained, and that conclusions remain proportional to the strength—and limitations—of the available evidence.
Shot in the Dark Forensics was originally co-founded by a seasoned detective, who contributed investigative perspective and case-development insight; the late Douglas Siddens, Sr., who supported early project formation and organizational development; and Dr. Amanda Whaley, ND, who established the scientific, analytical, and genealogical framework that continues to guide the practice.
Today, Shot in the Dark Forensics is led by Dr. Whaley, who serves as lead analyst and case manager and brings integrated experience in laboratory science, clinical DNA testing, genetic analysis, and genealogical research.
